Cologne, July 28, 2025 – ENGIE Deutschland and Regionalwerk Bodensee marked the start of construction of the future local heating network in Tettnang last Friday, July 25, 2025, with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony attended by Niklas Wiegand, Managing Director of ENGIE Deutschland, Michael Hofmann, Managing Director of Regionalwerk Bodensee, and Tettnang Mayor Regine Rist. The two partner companies are pooling their expertise in the heating supply company Tettnang mbH: ENGIE Deutschland is responsible for planning and construction, while Regionalwerk Bodensee is responsible for operation and sales. In the first phase of expansion, 14 municipal and state-owned buildings in Tettnang will be connected to the new local heating network. There are plans to expand to adjacent residential, commercial, and industrial areas in the future. Michael Hofmann, Managing Director of Regionalwerk Bodensee, said at the event: "As a heat supplier, we are driving forward the energy transition in our region. Environmentally friendly heat is a decisive factor in this. 80 percent of private energy consumption is accounted for by heating and hot water. Based on current forecasts, the new local heating network will enable Tettnang to save up to 4,176 tons of CO2 per year in heat supply compared to heat generation using fossil fuels." Hofmann also emphasized that the local heating project, with Regionalwerk as the local energy supplier and the local construction companies commissioned, clearly focuses on regional value creation.
The base load for the local heating network is provided by two biomass boilers. Using wood chips as fuel, most of which comes from the region, almost CO2 -neutral renewable heat is produced. A buffer storage tank covers increased heat demand. The heating plant has a gas boiler for emergency operation. This concept provides multiple backup for Tettnang's heat supply. "The ENGIE Deutschland team is contributing its many years of expertise in heat supply to the Tettnang network. This optimally complements the resources of our partner Regionalwerk Bodensee, and we are delighted to symbolically celebrate the start of construction for this groundbreaking municipal heat transition project with today's groundbreaking ceremony," says Niklas Wiegand, Managing Director of ENGIE Deutschland. ENGIE Deutschland currently operates around 100 of its own heating networks, which are being gradually decarbonized, and has held stakes in four local energy suppliers for decades.
