Battery storage solutions along the entire value chain

Add to Bookmarks

With the expansion of renewable energies, the demand for flexible and intelligent storage solutions is growing. Battery storage systems are one of the keys to security of supply and 24/7 green electricity delivery, grid stability and economical energy use.

ENGIE Germany is your partner for industrial-scale battery storage systems (BESS) – from planning, construction and operation to revenue optimisation and risk management. We also invest in storage projects ourselves.

Your advantages at a glance

  • Comprehensive project support – from analysis to marketing

  • Scalable solutions – from smaller industrial projects to large stand-alone battery storage systems

  • Experienced & globally connected – the ENGIE Group's goal is 10 gigawatts of BESS worldwide by 2030

  • Economical and sustainable – tolling agreements and other structured products

Your options with ENGIE

Combining BESS with renewable energy projects leverages the strengths of both technologies by storing excess energy generated during peak periods for later use, ensuring a stable and reliable energy supply and improving grid stability. Combining BESS with renewable projects enables a more efficient and sustainable energy system.

Do you have land that is suitable for the construction of renewable energy and storage facilities?

ENGIE is investing in large battery systems in its core markets worldwide to drive forward the energy transition, supply grids and offer flexibility to the markets. In Germany in particular, we are investing in large battery storage facilities and developing our own projects.

Are you looking for a partner for your BESS project?

In addition to development and financing, ENGIE also offers turnkey storage solutions. From design and construction to commissioning, our customers receive BESS from a single source.

We take care of the entire range of services:

  • Planning and construction
  • Selection of components, delivery and installation
  • Connection and commissioning
  • Higher-level connection, qualification and certification of the entire system at all voltage levels
  • Supply of grid connection transformers
  • Construction of complete substations for the BESS

We optimise battery storage with fixed (tolling) and flexible (profit-share) revenue models. BESS open up numerous sources of income – from wholesale markets (day-ahead, intraday) to system services (FCR, aFRR, mFRR). Depending on the location and technical design, additional applications are also possible, such as black start, redispatch or congestion management.

Companies with high electricity consumption in particular benefit from the use of BESS. This enables them to cushion their peak loads – whether from starting up machines, power-intensive processes or charging the company's electric fleet – and reduce their electricity bills.

This pays off: intelligent peak shaving can save up to 20 per cent of electricity costs from grid fees.

If you want to generate additional revenue with your BESS, ENGIE can optimise the utilisation concept to create scope for market optimisation with the battery.  See Market optimisation (a tab above).

Excerpt from ENGIE's references & projects in Europe

  • Pfreimd (Germany) – 12 MW
BESS in combination with pumped storage, optimised grid stability.

  • Vilvoorde (Belgium) – 200 MW / 800 MWh
One of the largest battery storage facilities in Europe.

  • Kallo (Belgium) – 100 MW / 400 MWh
The storage facility on the site of a former gas and oil power plant can supply more than 48,000 households with electricity for up to four hours.

  • Maxima (Netherlands) – 35 MW / 100 MWh
The facility is located on the site of an energy hub consisting of a 900 MW gas-fired power plant and a 32 MW solar park.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about battery storage solutions

1. What is a BESS (battery energy storage system)?
A battery storage system stores electrical energy and feeds it back into the grid when needed – for grid stabilisation, load shifting and yield optimisation.

2. What does "co-location storage" mean?
Co-location storage facilities are installed directly next to existing energy plants (e.g. solar or wind farms) in order to share infrastructure and space – which reduces costs and creates synergies.

3. What storage sizes does ENGIE offer?
Scalable from a few to hundreds of megawatts. The size is determined based on a location analysis and requirements.

4. How is storage marketed?
ENGIE actively markets storage on control energy markets (FCR, aFRR, mFRR) and on the spot market – supported by automated digital platforms.

5. What financing models are available?
In addition to proprietary investments, flexible models such as contracting are available.

6. Does ENGIE also offer EPC services?
Yes. ENGIE implements storage projects using a variety of models depending on requirements – from traditional lot allocation to EPC (engineering, procurement, construction) contracts and turnkey solutions.

7. Why choose ENGIE as a partner?
ENGIE supports all phases – from analysis, planning and financing to implementation, operation, marketing and risk management.
