  • Google’s partnership with ENGIE as a Carbon-Free Energy Manager has existed since 2021.

  • The partnership has now been expanded to include battery storage and additional renewable energy power purchase agreements (PPAs) to increase flexibility and grid stability.

  • Google's German operations are projected to run at or near 85% carbon-free energy in 2026 1.

Berlin – ENGIE and Google are deepening their collaboration to accelerate the energy transition in Germany. The two companies have extended and expanded their 24/7 carbon-free energy (CFE) partnership until 2030. By integrating battery storage and additional renewable energy PPAs, Google aims to directly support German decarbonization goals and clean, reliable, and affordable energy systems for everyone.

Drawing on the 2021 agreement for Carbon Free Energy, ENGIE will leverage its extensive energy management expertise to drive decarbonization in Germany as Google's German CFE manager. The goal is to provide hourly green energy from new onshore wind and solar projects, complemented by storage solutions. ENGIE will also integrate energy volumes from Google's existing long-term PPAs with third-party providers.

In addition to fluctuating renewable energy feed-in, ENGIE will utilize battery energy storage systems (BESS) and pumped storage in Germany. This innovative approach creates the necessary flexibility to precisely balance supply and demand, enabling Google’s German operations to run at or near 85% carbon-free energy in 20261.

The expansion of the partnership with ENGIE to supply CO₂-free energy is linked to Google's announcement that it will invest around €5.5 billion in AI infrastructure and office locations in Germany between 2026 and 2029. This step underscores both companies' commitment to decarbonization and innovation in the energy sector.

Katrin Fuhrmann, Head of Energy Management at ENGIE Germany, explains:

"We are delighted with our long-standing, trusting collaboration with Google and are ready to take the next step in supporting Google's decarbonization strategy and the German energy transition. With our broad portfolio of renewable energies, combined with battery storage and our expertise in energy optimization, we are continuously developing pioneering solutions for Google and enabling the sustainable growth of AI infrastructure."

Google's Adam Elman, Director of Sustainability EMEA, adds:

"Building on the success of the partnership signed in 2021, Engie will further support Google's regional carbon free energy ambitions in Germany. By actively innovating on energy supply models Google aims to directly support German decarbonization goals and a clean, reliable, and affordable energy system for everyone.”
