ENGIE Deutschland will construct a cooling plant at Stuttgart’s Sternhöhe and, under an energy supply contracting agreement, will provide nexspace with cooling for the water cooling of servers in the data center’s high-performance section. The planned cooling capacity is 2.8 megawatts and can be expanded to up to 3.8 megawatts. This ensures that the supply can flexibly grow in line with the data center’s power requirements. Delivery is scheduled to begin in October 2026; the contract has a term of 20 years and includes an option to extend it for an additional ten years.
With the data center that alstria has leased to nexspace and is currently building in Stuttgart’s Sternhöhe district, nexspace will provide colocation services across an area of approximately 1,800 square meters. To this end, the data center will provide 3.4 megawatts of IT power for the operation of servers, storage systems, and network equipment. The cooling supply provided by ENGIE plays a key role in ensuring that the data center achieves a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.2 or better, thereby meeting the requirements of the Energy Efficiency Act.
Looking ahead, there are plans to integrate the waste heat generated by the data center’s cooling process into a central heating supply on the campus. Sternhöhe—formerly used as a headquarters—is now an open campus home to numerous technology and digital companies. The owner, alstria, is purposefully developing the campus into a tech hub with modern work environments. A key strategic goal is decarbonization by 2030.
“The contract with ENGIE Deutschland is not only a fundamental building block for energy-efficient cooling of our data center, but also for the sustainable development of Stuttgart’s Sternhöhe,” explains nexspace CEO Christian Zipp.
“Data centers place the highest demands on supply security and energy efficiency,” adds Cathrin Lind, Head of the Energy Solutions Division at ENGIE Deutschland. “With this project, ENGIE underscores its role as a reliable partner for data center operators, delivering on the customer promise of a permanently highly available and sustainable cooling supply.”
