Dortmund – Thyssengas GmbH, one of Germany’s leading gas transmission system operators headquartered in Dortmund, has commissioned ENGIE Deutschland to modernise the complete electrical, instrumentation and control technology at its compressor station in Hünxe. The project comprises a comprehensive renewal, as explained by Kathrin Schaefer, Project Manager at Thyssengas: “Our objective is to bring the Hünxe compressor station to the best available, certified technology. This project is of great importance to us, as the station makes a key contribution to security of supply. For implementation, we rely on our long-established and proven collaboration with ENGIE Deutschland.”
The facilities at the Hünxe compressor station are highly complex. The site comprises three compressor units: two units are each driven by a natural gas-powered turbo compressor, while the third unit is powered by an electrically driven turbo compressor. The process control system forms the interface between the individual components located throughout the station’s peripheral systems and maps the required process engineering functions in software. In addition, it enables full automation and ensures safety-related monitoring of all process engineering operations.
ENGIE Deutschland’s expert team is intimately familiar with these highly complex conditions thanks to many years of on-site involvement. In addition to in-depth knowledge of the location, the team brings extensive technical expertise to the comprehensive modernisation of the Hünxe compressor station. Matthias Walters, Head of Control Systems and responsible for the project at ENGIE Deutschland, states: “The entire ENGIE team from Power Solutions and Secure Power Systems is proud to support Thyssengas as general contractor for the overall Hünxe project. We will contribute our holistic expertise to the modernization, thereby helping to secure the reliable availability of this critical infrastructure for the future.” Preparatory work is currently underway. From April 2026, the station is expected to be taken completely out of operation for the modernization. During the tightly scheduled project phase, up to 100 specialists will be working on site simultaneously, including the ENGIE team as well as numerous regional partners and subcontractors. The project includes the renewal of all electrical components within the station and the complete process control system. ENGIE Deutschland is also responsible for the full replacement of the E/I&C technology. In total, more than 73 kilometers of cable will be newly installed, around 100 new control cabinets supplied, and all field devices (sensors and actuators) replaced. All modernization measures must be completed by the start of the next heating period on 31 October 2026. From that date, regular gas transport operations will resume, and the Hünxe compressor station will be optimally positioned for the future with state-of-the-art E/I&C technology and comprehensive plant protection – thanks to ENGIE Deutschland.
