Cologne – Thirty percent lower energy costs and 78 percent fewer CO₂ emissions compared with the existing infrastructure: these are the guaranteed savings that the Agricultural Training Centre in Landshut-Schönbrunn, located in the District of Lower Bavaria, will benefit from through a new Energy Performance Contracting agreement with ENGIE Deutschland.
Founded in 1854, the Agricultural Training Centre is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in Germany. Its mission then and now is to provide sound, up-to-date and practice-oriented education and training in agriculture. The campus comprises 26 buildings, including teaching facilities, residential accommodation, administrative offices and workshops.
Michael Zehentbauer, Head of the Agricultural Training Centre Landshut-Schönbrunn, said:
“As one of Germany’s most established agricultural education institutions, we have a responsibility not only towards our trainees but also towards the careful use of resources. ENGIE Deutschland’s concept convinced us because it is tailored precisely to our requirements. Energy Performance Contracting combines modern energy systems with guaranteed savings. In this way, we are modernizing our campus while providing our trainees with a credible example of sustainability in practice.”
At the heart of the project is a campus-wide building management system. ENGIE Deutschland’s team will connect all buildings on the Agricultural Training Centre campus via a central web-based building management platform, including 16 new control cabinets and fully renewed Direct Digital Control (DDC) stations. Future heat supply will be provided through district heating and two heat pumps. In addition, ENGIE Deutschland’s experts will modernize the heat distribution systems in all campus buildings.
The measures also include eight new photovoltaic systems with a combined capacity of 750 kilowatts and a battery storage system with a capacity of one megawatt-hour, which will also be connected to the existing photovoltaic installation with an output of 241 kilowatts. The project will be completed by replacing the existing lighting with 1,400 new LED luminaires. As part of the Energy Performance Contracting agreement, ENGIE Deutschland will be responsible for construction, the majority of project financing and the long-term operation of the new low-maintenance technical systems. Commissioning is scheduled for July 2027. Thereafter, ENGIE Deutschland’s team will monitor all system functions throughout the contract period. Should the contractually guaranteed energy savings not be achieved, the Agricultural Training Centre will receive financial compensation from ENGIE Deutschland.
Christian Bippus, Projects Lead South and Project Manager at ENGIE Deutschland, said:
“We are delighted that we were able to convince the Agricultural Training Centre in Landshut-Schönbrunn with our technical and economic expertise. The project demonstrates the level of savings in energy costs and CO₂ emissions that can be achieved in existing buildings, often without requiring any investment from the customer. Public institutions in particular face significant cost pressures while also serving as role models for society. Through Energy Performance Contracting, ENGIE Deutschland combines economic benefits for our customers with guaranteed reductions in CO₂ emissions. The project in Landshut-Schönbrunn therefore serves as a blueprint for many other municipalities and institutions across Germany.”
