ENGIE Deutschland and GEKA conclude future-oriented energy partnership

08 June 2021
  • The market leader for the production of packaging systems and applicators for colored liquid cosmetics GEKA and ENGIE Deutschland are expanding their cooperation from an already successful supply to a long-term energy partnership
  • The common goal is to reduce the CO2 footprint of GEKA's Bechhofen (Germany) site

Cologne – ENGIE Deutschland GmbH has secured a new order from the cosmetics industry: GEKA GmbH has entered into a long-term energy partnership with the leading specialist for technology, energy and service. GEKA, the market leader for the production of complete packaging systems and cosmetic applicators for colored liquid cosmetics, has been part of the Swiss industrial group Sulzer AG since 2016. The two companies are expanding their longstanding successful cooperation with this energy partnership: ENGIE Deutschland has already been supplying its customer at the Bechhofen site in Bavaria with highly efficient electricity, heat, cooling and compressed air since 2007. In the past few years, the experts have optimized the generation of useful energy and media and installed, among other things, a combined heat and power cooling system and a QUANTUM air refrigeration machine from the subsidiary ENGIE Refrigeration – to the full satisfaction of the customer.

From supplier to energy partner

GEKA therefore continues to rely on the expertise of ENGIE Deutschland. In the course of the cooperation, however, the framework conditions and subsequently the customer requirements have changed: "In recent months, GEKA has been able to expand its production at the Bechhofen site. This has resulted in new supply structures and changed useful energy quantities. We are responding to this development with a new concept that focuses on the highest possible security of supply while reducing CO2 emissions. We are proud that we are expanding our cooperation within this framework and that we are transforming ourselves from a pure supply partner to an energy partner for GEKA," says Michael Knür of ENGIE Deutschland, who is responsible for the project. One of GEKA's core business objectives is to secure and expand production at its German site. To achieve this, ENGIE Deutschland will increase the energy efficiency of the Bechhofen plant and reduce energy costs in the coming years. The ENGIE team relies on measures that reduce regulatory costs as well as measures that reduce consumption – from the installation of a photovoltaic system to the use of data analysis tools to the maximization of waste heat utilization from compressed air. Further reductions in primary energy costs are also on the agenda.

Decarbonization as an overriding goal

In addition, ENGIE Deutschland and GEKA have agreed on medium- and long-term targets for 2036 as part of the energy partnership. Together, the two partners will develop and implement a strategy for further decarbonization of the company. For example, production will be supplied as far as possible by renewable energies in the future. "Our mission at ENGIE Deutschland is to accompany our customers on the path to climate neutrality," explains Norbert Speckmann, Head of the Energy & Facility Solutions Division. Due to the long time horizon, the progress of the project must be continuously reviewed, as he emphasizes: "Of course, we monitor the development of all measures and decide in regular workshops together with GEKA on any necessary readjustments. In addition, a management-level jour fixe is held each year to evaluate goal achievement to date."
